Mid of August in Rome is like a film set, empty with a couple of lost tourists. Residents go to holidays, shops close.
This morning after the national holiday Ferragosto, at 9 in the morning, armored police cars arrived to SanLorenzo, the university district, in Via dei Sabelli 102, Ex Fonderie Bastianelli. The metal foundry opened in the beginning of the last century, was closed, abandoned and in decay until this spring when the citizens decided to occupy and found Communia, a public space returned to the neighborhood, a social laboratory for self organization and mutual help.
Yeah sounds real dangerous, call the police, hell, call the President!
The police evicted people inside the building, took under custody and released them after a few hours. A little search on web reveals a construction firm planning to turn it to a building with chic housing and private green spaces for a few residents. It seems like a great investment, because you know, people won’t be actually living there. Official info from Eurispes indicates more than 200.000 empty apartments only in Rome. Keep it empty, keep profits high, that’s the spirit!
After the Gezi Revolt in Turkey, Communia Occupation was one of the centri sociali – occupied spaces in solidarity with Gezi Resistence. Other than the open school, free sport activities, free help desks, art shows, Communia was also hosting Queerlab, who invited me to talk about the Gezi Movement during their weekly assembly. In the entry hall, a series of Gezi posters welcomed me under the italian social movements, NoMuos, NoInc and NoTav.
